Diversity Abroad

The LGBTQ Resource Center is committed to encourage and support the participation of all students in academic programs inside and outside UNM. We believe that traveling and studying abroad is a unique experience to learn about different cultures that will enhance the perspective about your field of study, your own person, and to gain specific skills for your future career while developing self-confidence.

LGBTQ students may have to face particular situations and challenges during their study abroad programs. For this, it is important for students to be aware about the culture of the country you want to visit, but more important their attitudes towards the LGBTQ community.

We highly recommend you to research your host country and to talk to your study abroad advisor on campus and consider how the location, culture, and program align with your interests, and identity-related considerations. Here, you will find some resources to help you have a better and safe experience.

Some questions to consider:

  • What are laws and cultural norms governing the LGBTQ community?
  • Are there norms and behavioral expectations?
  • Can you request special housing accommodation, like single rooms, private baths or certain roommates?
  • Are there LGBTQ organizations on your host campus or in the community?
  • Which parts of the world are more segregated by sex?
  • How openly out you are?

Consider the resources you have available in-country if you face discrimination or legal problems. As always, you should familiarize yourself with the location and functions of the local U.S. Embassy, which can be found at www.usembassy.gov and can provide information and assistance to U.S. citizens. Many countries also have LGBT advocacy organizations, some of which are accessible by travelers.
